Day 5 in Cambridge

I can actually see the sun this morning. The past 2 days were wet with rain & gloomy skies all throughout. But even though there's sun, it was still freezing. I think it was about 4°C in the morning & it was even colder at the end of the day.

Anyway, today we had a new trainer called Owain who enlightened us on upgrading the system from a HV to XVP to EP with & without H2O & the various detectors found on our equipment. We also touched on the CZ BSD detector which was relatively troublesome to install. All of us had our fair share of getting some hands on to upgrade the system & to install the detector. But as we deal with high vacuum systems, we break for lunch while waiting for the system to pump down.

Lunch. It was sandwiches again & I had the seafood flavoured with shrimps & crabsticks fillings. It was really nice although the bread was kinda hard. There was another which I think it was spicy chicken. That was ok but I'd rather have the seafood.

We carried on with the training after lunch & found the system was unable to pump down. We checked each & every portal that we had touched on & found 1 of the O-rings had some particles on it. Thinking that the system would be able to pump down after cleaning that, we found another problem. This time round the system was pumping & venting at the same time! It wasn't after much troubleshooting that we realise there was a leak valve missing! Thus the turbo pump was happily pumping away while another opening under the chamber was constantly leaking air in! We unplugged the controller & yes, FINALLY the system was able to pump down. But it was already close to 6pm by then so we decided to run up the gun first thing tomorrow morning. I've learnt much today but funny thing was that I don't know how to pen it down in my notes. I hope it all stays fresh in my memory for good...

I'm back in my room now & it is close to 7pm. We've arranged to meet David the UK engineer at 715pm & he will bring us somewhere for dinner & drinks. I guess I should get prepared now. Nah, I wouldn't wanna keep him waiting & besides, I'm hungry!
